About

St. Gianna's Place was founded in 2016 by four Catholic women, and its board of directors was formed later that year. The organization received 501(c)(3) nonprofit status in early 2017. It began by leasing an old rectory from the Diocese of Manchester, NH, and opened its doors to residents in fall 2019. The home bought the rectory outright in 2026.

The home describes its mission as providing a safe, God-centered place for pregnant women and their children, and calls itself a safe harbor for mothers and children. Its stated beliefs include that every conceived child has a divine purpose, that every family matters, and that every woman has worth. Women are welcomed regardless of their faith.

Residents live in private bedrooms with full bathrooms, and share a kitchen, dining room, family room and a play area for babies. The house has a chapel that displays a relic of St. Gianna Beretta Molla. Residents take part in in-house classes, prayer and Sunday Mass, and share in caring for the home.

After applying, applicants are contacted by phone, usually within a week, and the whole process from application to move-in typically takes a few weeks. The home accepts women age 18 or older at any stage of pregnancy and from any state. Residents are required to work or attend school 20 hours a week, save 30% of their income, make paying off debt a priority, and maintain sobriety.

Each resident is assigned a case manager who connects her to prenatal care and other needs. The home offers life skills classes on topics such as parenting, cooking, personal finance, driving and CPR, along with GED support, driving education and scholarships for continuing education. Transportation to appointments and work is provided when possible, and help is available with childcare. Residents receive baby clothes, a crib, diapers and formula.

Run in the Catholic tradition, the home pairs faith practices with structure through work or school, savings goals and practical life skills.
