About

Smoothe Electrolysis was founded in Walnut Creek and later opened a second studio in Oakland. The business describes itself as the Bay Area's leading clinic for pre-surgical transgender and cosmetic electrolysis, and says its aim is to help clients feel their best in their own skin. Electrologists complete a lengthy training program to meet the quality and efficiency standards set by the founding master electrologist, and the business says its team holds high quality standards.

Every visit begins with an assessment of skin and hair type, and the treatment plan is shaped around each client's budget. Treatments are done manually, with settings adjusted to the individual and kept at the lowest effective level. Each session ends with cataphoresis, where a metal probe is used to soothe the treated area.

Face and body sessions are priced by time: 15 minutes is $55, 30 minutes is $85, 45 minutes is $128, 60 minutes is $170, 90 minutes is $255 and 120 minutes is $340. Sensitive or genital areas and insurance-covered treatment, including gender affirming care, are $85 for 30 minutes, $170 for 60, $255 for 90 and $340 for 120. The business labels the 60-minute face and body session a best seller.

The business accepts Kaiser Permanente, Valley Health Plan, Sutter Health, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of California. For eligible Kaiser Permanente, Valley Health Plan and Sutter Health patients, the business bills the insurer directly so the client pays only the copay at the visit. With other insurers, the client pays at the visit and receives a monthly superbill to submit for reimbursement. Insurance is billed in 30-minute units, and the carrier sets coverage amounts; treatments the carrier does not authorize are not covered by the business.

The first visit blocks one hour and includes a free consultation and a skin and hair assessment, with at least 30 minutes of treatment billed. The first phone consultation is free and can be booked online, while other appointments are booked by text, call or email. Before coming in, clients are asked to shave the area 3 to 4 days ahead, avoid tweezing, threading and waxing, and stay well hydrated. Clients may apply an over-the-counter topical anesthetic of up to 5 percent 45 minutes before the appointment, under plastic wrap.

Treatment plans are built around each client's skin and hair type and budget, with manual work and settings kept at the lowest effective level.
