Shizen opened in November 2005 with a team of stylists from Tokyo. In June 2008 it launched a second salon, The Oversea, in Omotesando, Tokyo, and in October 2012 it moved into a larger space in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Shizen opened in November 2005 with a team of stylists from Tokyo. In June 2008 it launched a second salon, The Oversea, in Omotesando, Tokyo, and in October 2012 it moved into a larger space in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
Since its early years, the salon has drawn an international clientele from the worlds of art, design, fashion, advertising and publishing. Its stylists do hair for fashion clients in New York and Tokyo, as well as for runway shows, collections, events, and print and digital campaigns. Credited hair work includes projects for The Journal, Tim Barber, Kathy Lo, Richard Kern, Keiichi Nitta, Jayne Lies and Opening Ceremony.
The salon also produces art books alongside creators based in New York.
Visits are by appointment, booked by phone at (929) 919-1430. The salon is open 10:00 am to 7:00 pm and is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, and it accepts credit cards. If a time is not available, clients can join the waitlist by emailing shizenwaiting@gmail.com, and the salon phones when an appointment opens. Prices other than the haircut depend on hair length and amount, the current condition of the hair, and how long it has been since the last color.
The salon describes its style as a blend of Japanese hospitality and New York glamour.
