The salon is set up for sensory needs, with reduced noise and gentle lighting. Clients can book a salon visit or a haircut at home. New clients start with a free 15-minute phone call that covers haircut history, sensitivities and how to prepare for the appointment before any services are booked.
The business runs a year-round haircutting program for children in partnership with the Occupational Therapy Department at AdventHealth East Orlando, and provides haircuts onsite there once a child is ready. Therapy at AdventHealth is covered by insurance when applicable, while haircuts carry a separate fee.
Shear Patience additionally serves families alongside occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, ABA professionals, BCBAs, therapy centers and healthcare professionals. Visitors may cover the cost of a sensory-friendly haircut through sponsorship, or make a general donation instead.
Cancellations or changes need at least 48 hours' notice; later cancellations are charged the full appointment cost, with exceptions only for true emergencies at the business's discretion.
Each appointment is individualized, with no expectation that the haircut look a certain way or happen on a set timeline.
