The business started in 2001 as a single massage treatment room in Malden. It moved into a larger space in Medford in 2002 and adopted the name Serenity in the City in 2007. It now runs two locations, each offering salon and spa services.

The Medford studio has the broader menu, including permanent hair reduction, which is offered only there, plus an infrared sauna and a eucalyptus steam room. The Stoneham location offers skin, hair, massage and nail services and hosts a wellness studio where yoga and movement classes run at all levels. Studio amenities include infused water, lightly spritzed aromatherapy towels and yoga props, and some classes are gently warmed with infrared heat.

The business describes its goal as a high-touch space where guests can step away from daily busyness, relax and leave feeling better than when they arrived, with a focus on community. Services are booked by appointment, and clients are asked to arrive 15 minutes early. Cancellations made with less than 24 hours' notice are charged at 50%, and no-shows are charged in full. Each service also carries a small operational charge: $1 on services of $50 or less and $2.50 on services above $50.

For groups, the salon has about 6,000 square feet and several treatment rooms, suited to corporate retreats, bachelorette parties, bridal showers, birthdays and girls' nights out. Group events include complimentary beverages and cheese and crackers, and a $215 deposit is required, of which $15 is non-refundable. Packages such as A Little Retreat and the Couple's Package are booked four to six weeks ahead with a $100 per person deposit. The business says it supports the Medford Food Pantry and other community initiatives.
