About

Melissa Parker and Easton Bajsec founded Scisters Salon in 2010. The two met while working at a previous salon and wrote their business plan together in a business class. The salon has since marked its 15th anniversary and says it launched its zero-waste hair care work more than 12 years ago. It describes itself as a pioneer in zero-waste business and says readers of San Diego Magazine voted it Best Salon in San Diego in the 2023 Reader's Picks. Its listed core values are exemplary service, connection, continuous improvement, social responsibility and a wealth mindset.

The salon describes its approach as low waste rather than zero waste, aiming to keep as close to zero waste to landfill as possible. It states that it has reduced its waste by 99 percent and that a CBS segment reported it reuses or recycles 99 percent of what it uses. Salon waste such as aluminum color tubes, color waste, gloves and hair clippings goes to Green Circle, and the salon ships about one box twice a year against a monthly expectation of one. It is a 1% For The Planet member, donates a portion of proceeds each year to an approved environmental nonprofit, and gives its empty five-gallon Element buckets to I Love A Clean SD for community clean-ups.

Element is the salon's in-house line of natural hair care and beauty products, sent in bulk from its lab. Its formulas are free of parabens, sulfates, phthalates, mineral oils and GMOs, and are cruelty-free and palm oil free. A fragrance-free option is offered in the laundry line. Ingredients are described as sustainably harvested and worker-friendly, with organic chosen where possible. Shampoos and styling aids are bought in bulk and sold by the ounce, so guests can buy any amount. Guests can bring their own bottles to refill or buy glass or aluminum bottles in two sizes, and a jar library lets them take a donated, sanitized jar and fill it. The salon says its bulk program diverts 80 plastic bottles for every five-gallon bucket of product.

New guests arrive 10 minutes early for their first service and add the New Guest service when booking, since the salon reviews each booking before confirming. A first visit includes a salon tour, a consultation, custom color blending for color services, and styling with at-home care recommendations. Color formulas are saved to the guest's online profile for future visits. Shampoo services take place in a Sanctuary room and include a hot towel head and neck massage. Guests 10 and older are welcome, and online booking is available through the Book Here tab on the website. Cancellations or changes need 48 hours notice, and a no-charge correction is offered for cut or color concerns reported within 7 days of the visit.

Aims to reduce waste and offer toxin-free, sustainable beauty products and services, using sugaring instead of waxing for fewer disposables.

Guests are offered complimentary coffee, tea, water and snacks in a calm space that includes a Sanctuary room for shampoo and rest.
