About

SC4Kids Salon is a children's hair salon in downtown East Austin, set in a city building in the African-American Historical District. The salon works with hair of every texture, from straight to coily, and organizes its services by age, starting with a consultation and then groups for ages 2 to 4 and 5 to 9.

The salon says it values healthy hair above all else. It notes that a silk press applies heat that only healthy, mature hair can tolerate, so a stylist must approve silk press before a child can book it. The salon describes its approach as a hair therapy approach, aiming for a comfortable visit, and says clients should leave feeling better than when they arrived. It also describes its natural hair care as a way to build children's confidence.

Every new client starts with a 30-minute New Roots Consultation, which can be done in person or virtually for $25. A consultation and meet-and-greet is required before a child's first full appointment. Bookings open eight weeks in advance, and a waitlist resets monthly; scheduling and notifications run through Vagaro. Booking requires a 50% deposit, which is non-refundable, plus a $2 processing fee. The deposit can roll over once if the appointment is rescheduled within 30 days of the original date. Cancellations outside the 72-hour window forfeit the deposit.

Appointments average about two and a half hours, according to the salon's estimate. Hair should be taken down and fully detangled before the visit, ideally two to three days ahead, or an extra charge applies. Only the child being serviced may be in the salon, and children are asked to sit still, lean back at the shampoo bowl, follow instructions, and stay calm. Parents should bring a backpack with healthy snacks, a closed water or juice container, and something to keep the child busy, since there is no refrigerator or microwave. Free parking is available behind the building. The main doors lock from 5pm to 8am, on weekends, and on holidays, with no keypad, so clients must call the salon to get in.

Gro Culture is a separate booking for clients ages 10 and up, offering braids, silk press, and loc services in Austin.

The salon puts healthy hair first and describes its natural hair care as a way to build children's confidence, with a comfortable, hair therapy style of visit.

The salon describes itself as a fun, welcoming space for children.
