Electrolysis sends a small electric current through a fine, sterile probe into the opening of each follicle to destroy the cells that produce hair. The salon states that electrolysis is the only method approved by the FDA for permanent hair removal, and that it works for all skin types, hair types, skin colors, hair colors and body areas. Clients usually feel a brief heat or pinch during treatment, and sensitivity varies by body area and by person. Temporary redness or tenderness can follow, and clients receive post-treatment instructions from their electrologist.

Standard electrolysis sessions are booked by length, from 5 minutes to 3 hours, and suit most areas outside intimate and surgical preparation work.
