ROOTS the Beauty Underground was started by Laura, a Laguna Beach native who grew up in the city. Her interest in clean cosmetics began in 2008 and was followed by about three years of research. After moving back to Laguna Beach in 2011, she spent nine months writing a business plan and looking into non-toxic products.

The shop states its mission is to support self-care through clean cosmetics, and describes itself as a self-care oasis. It stocks small, independently owned clean brands, including ILIA, RMS Beauty, True Botanicals and Odacité. According to the shop, ROOTS was one of ILIA's first accounts, in 2012. Products are made in Laguna Beach, and the online shop sells makeup, hair, skin, bath and body, wellness products, gift sets and ROOTS gift cards.

A visit can start with a free beauty consultation. For makeup, clients can book a one-on-one Clean Your Beauty Routine lesson, where they bring their own makeup bag and brushes for help choosing clean swap-outs, or book makeup application for graduations, proms, parties and other occasions. Salon services are booked directly by calling 949-424-4266.

The hair salon uses Organic Colour Systems, a permanent color range the salon describes as ammonia-free, vegan, dermatologist-tested and free of parabens and resorcinol. Color services include root touchups, all-over color, highlights, balayage and color correction, with color correction priced after a consultation. Precision cuts, shampoo and blow dry, updos and treatments such as a scalp detox or hot oil are also offered. Blow dry and style can be added to color services for an additional fee.

Wedding services include hair and makeup trials and day-of-event work at the event location. Wedding services are estimated at one hour per person, per service, and require a 50% deposit at booking. Private makeup events can be booked for birthdays, bridal showers and fundraisers. Ladies Night Out is a private clean beauty event for a host and 10 to 20 guests, held after business hours at the salon, and ROOTS on the Road is a makeup service listed separately from the salon.
