About

Rob Roy Academy was founded in 1979, when its first school opened. The founders, Robert Lapierre and Roy Samra, had started out as hairdressers in 1958 with a single salon in Worcester, Massachusetts, and before opening the school they ran weekly training sessions in their salons.

Rob Roy Academy describes its aim as a post-secondary education that builds technical skill, self-assurance and interpersonal ability, preparing students for licensure and jobs in the beauty and barber fields. Equipment and textbooks are supplied and covered by the total course cost. Students are required to wear a black Rob Roy Academy smock bearing a name tag, paired with plain black pants or a skirt; the top may be any colour.

Cosmetology is a 1,000-hour program offered in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, covering haircutting fundamentals, clipper cutting, texturizing, hair coloring and highlighting, nails, makeup application and skin care. Barbering is also a 1,000-hour program, covering haircutting, advanced clipper cutting, shaving and skin care, grooming, texturizing and hair coloring. Esthetics, offered at the Fall River and Worcester campuses, covers skincare physiology and analysis, facial and massage techniques, hair removal, makeup and professional skills. Manicuring covers nail and limb anatomy, safe nail practices, manicures, pedicures, gel and acrylic enhancements, hand massage and nail art. Instructor Training is offered at the Woonsocket campus in day and evening sessions and covers course development, teaching principles, lesson planning, classroom management and evaluation.

The Clinic is a service area where all work is performed by supervised students, and student clinics offer full client services in cosmetology, esthetics and barbering. Clients book by calling their preferred campus. Color and texture services include a cut and style, and their prices may vary depending on the amount of product needed. Keratin treatment includes take-home products.

Each campus offers its own mix of programs. Fall River offers cosmetology, barbering and esthetics; New Bedford and Taunton offer cosmetology; Woonsocket offers cosmetology, barbering and instructor training; and Worcester offers cosmetology and barbering. Some programs offer full-time and part-time schedules, and some campuses offer day and evening classes. Most classes start monthly, and the schedule for a specific program and location is provided on request. Applicants may enroll at any time except for the Esthetics program.

The school states that it is licensed by the Massachusetts Board of Registration of Cosmetology and Barbering, accredited by the National Accrediting Commission of Career Arts and Sciences, and approved by the federal Department of Education and the Rhode Island Department of Higher Education. It is also a member of the American Association of Cosmetology Schools, the Massachusetts Association of Cosmetology Schools and the Massachusetts Association of Private Career Schools. Applicants must be at least 16 in Massachusetts or 18 in Rhode Island, hold a high school diploma or GED, interview with an admissions representative and provide transcripts. Licensed Massachusetts barbers and cosmetologists are entitled to a 500-hour credit toward the 1,000-hour program in the other field.

Graduates are offered employment assistance regardless of graduation date, and the school employs a placement advisor, though it does not guarantee employment or specific salaries. Housing is not offered at any location. Students have access to federal and state financial aid programs, and an interest-free payment plan is available. Financial aid applicants must be U.S. citizens, nationals or recognized aliens, and student loans are not issued until a student has been enrolled for at least 30 days.

Training is education-first, built around supervised hands-on work in the Clinic and student clinics alongside classroom instruction. The school teaches a step-by-step haircutting method, called The System, that the founders designed to cover haircutting fundamentals.

According to the school, each campus has its own personality and hosts skill competitions such as barber battles, cosmetology competitions and cut-a-thons.
