About

Planet Roots works on locked hair from its Hemet, California location. The business describes its services as unmatched, which is its own claim. Services are by appointment only, booked through the website, by phone or by text. Every new client books a consultation first. It runs 30 to 60 minutes and costs $50. During it, the business checks the hair in person, goes over concerns and requests, and sets a plan for the next booked session.

Maintenance is the core of the menu. Crochet, Inter-Crochet and Retwist - No Style are hourly services with a three-hour minimum, priced from $150, and each includes a wash and no style. Extra body maintenance time for crochet and inter-crochet is billed at $50 an hour. The business recommends not leaving a retwist in for longer than two weeks. Loc maintenance is meant to address new growth and work through the length of the loc to help prevent long-term damage, loss of locs, hair loss and scalp sensitivity.

For deeper cleaning, the Detox is a two- to three-hour wash that soaks locs in lemon juice, vinegar and baking soda to loosen buildup from oils, sweat, product and debris. It is priced from $100 to $150 and is recommended every six months. Shampoo + Dry is a one- to two-hour deep shampoo, priced from $50 to $100, and is also available as an add-on. Clients who skip the shampoo must arrive fully washed and dried, or extra time is charged. Loc Repair fixes weak spots, loose or dangling locs and reattaches locs when needed, at $7 per loc. Single and add-on services may need extra time, and some add-ons work best combined with a main appointment.

After a maintenance or starter session, the business applies Nag Champa Jojoba Oil to the scalp to help hold moisture in the locs, and a Rose Water Spray can be used after service for a cooling, tingling feel. Cancellations are accepted up to 24 hours ahead. Later cancellations may be charged 50 percent of the scheduled cost or forfeit the deposit. A 15-minute grace period applies, after which the appointment must be rescheduled and any deposit moves to the new date.

Jewelry is sold by call or text, with shipping available. Pieces include earrings, rings, palm and wrist cuffs, neck collars and pendants, nose cuffs and loc jewelry. Materials include copper, 22k gold plated wire and natural stones such as African turquoise, amethyst and obsidian. Copper pieces will patina over time and should be kept away from water.

Work is built around the loc and the scalp, starting with an in-person consultation and a plan for each booked session.
