Eric McPhaul owns Planet 21, which opened in 1998 with nine chairs and has since grown to two locations. According to the salon, it was the first departmentalized salon in Charlotte, with stylists who specialize in either cut or color.

Stylists work together as a team on the design and treatment of each client's hair. The salon's team has designed and produced several hair and fashion shows, and its work has appeared in consumer hair magazines and the trade book Passion Magazine. In February 2006, the founder and a colleague represented Wella Hair Color in a year-long trade magazine ad campaign.

The Fountains is at 8031 Ardrey Kell Rd., 704.847.1559, open Monday 9am to 3pm, Tuesday through Thursday 9am to 7:30pm, Friday 9am to 7pm and Saturday 9am to 3pm. The Arboretum is at 8040 Providence Rd., 704.543.1083, open Monday through Thursday 9am to 7:30pm, Friday 9am to 7pm and Saturday 9am to 3pm. Keratin tip extensions are offered only at The Arboretum, and Bellami extensions only at The Fountains.

Stylist prices are set by length of employment at the salon. Blow dries are priced at $5 less than the cut price, $55 with a colorist and $65 with a senior colorist. Extensions and corrective color require a consultation before pricing, and the Brazilian keratin treatment, starting at $350, requires a consultation and deposit. Apprentices take part in supervised workshops on Mondays with senior stylists and colorists present, and volunteers can sign up to model for training workshops by calling The Arboretum.

The salon says its approach rests on excellence, quality and a first-class experience, with stylists collaborating on each client's design and treatment.
