Ober Yahr Electrolysis

The practice was founded in 1988 by Dr. Charles Yahr, DC, CPE, and Jane Yahr, BS, CPE, and is now owned and run by Jamie Ober, CPE. It also uses the name OY Electrolysis. The practice describes itself as a long-standing leader in permanent hair removal in Pittsburgh.

Electrolysis inserts a fine wire filament into each hair follicle and applies current, and treatment may take several visits. The practice offers thermolysis and blend methods alongside standard electrolysis, and it customizes each plan by choosing filament types and methods. It says its electrolysis is FDA-approved and works across light and dark, coarse and fine hair on any skin tone. Gold filaments made from 14 karat gold are also available.

A new client starts with a free 30-minute consultation covering hair removal goals, medical history, the areas to treat, how electrolysis works and a customized plan. A consultation followed by a 15 to 30 minute initial treatment starts at $65. Visits are by appointment only, with daytime, evening and Saturday times at both locations, and hours vary by office. Numbing cream is available for sessions of 30 minutes or longer, and numbing spray is offered for shorter ones. Clients can book through the downloadable app or call, and there is no receptionist, so leaving a message or texting is preferred. Tipping is not required but is appreciated.

Genital electrolysis is offered mainly to clients preparing for gender-affirming surgery. Surgical providers typically ask for at least 12 months of consistent electrolysis beforehand, and the practice suggests starting 6 to 12 months before surgery. Pricing for these sessions is tiered by the electrologist's experience and advanced training.
