Milkweeds operates from the Collinsville Axe Factory on the Farmington River. It is a community space where independent hair stylists run their own businesses under one roof, with four chairs and a bright, spacious room. The shop describes itself as a kind and sociable place and as an inclusive space that welcomes all individuals.
The shop takes its name from the local native milkweed, a host plant for Monarch butterflies. That connection to the natural world reflects the wider outlook of the space, which promotes a mindful lifestyle that is socially and environmentally conscious.
The stylists share a similar philosophy about haircare and work as a team. They help each other when needed and keep learning together. Each stylist handles their own bookings and payments, so clients book directly with the stylist they choose.
Milkweeds also runs The Milkweeds Podcast, uploaded every two weeks, which covers a range of topics and includes interviews. The shop plans to host creative workshops as well.
For at-home care, the shop recommends hair products that are American made, sustainably packaged and non-toxic, and it looks for ritual products that are socially and environmentally progressive.
The stylists share a haircare philosophy and a clean, conscious, community-focused approach to the space, and they stay educated together.
Spacious and bright with natural light, with an eclectic mix of music playing.
