Maternal Massage and More was founded by Janet Markovits and works with clients across the perinatal period. It has offices at 636 Broadway, Suite 1105 in NoHo and in Park Slope, Brooklyn, and can also come to clients' homes, bringing its own equipment. The business aims to be part of a client's journey from fertility through pregnancy, motherhood and beyond, and it welcomes partners, dads, athletes and other family members as well as pregnant clients.
Prenatal massage can begin in the first trimester and continue through the final weeks and beyond. Each session includes lymphatic drainage and may add deep tissue work or other techniques chosen for the client. Sessions use a body support system with cushions that adjust as pregnancy progresses, letting many clients lie on their belly, sit supported on the back, or lie on their side. Moxibustion can be added when a baby is breech. The business states that all of its positions are safe in pregnancy, and that the cushions can also be used after a C-section and while nursing.
Postnatal massage can be booked right after birth, including following a C-section, and can take place in the hospital, at home or in the office. Babies may join these sessions. Postnatal work can include breast massage and lymphatic drainage, and it can be added after a lactation consult. Clients may also come in for labor support, which includes a private lesson for a partner and labor preparation massage, and clients may book a session while in labor.
Lactation visits last about 1.5 hours and can be in person or virtual, with house calls in NYC and Brooklyn and office visits in Park Slope and NoHo. Consults cover concerns such as latch, milk supply, engorgement, mastitis, tongue and lip tie, weaning, pumping, flange fitting, bottle feeding and bottle refusal. The approach does not judge a family's feeding choices and aims to help each client reach their own goals.
Clients need to complete an intake form to reserve an appointment, and may keep underwear on or stay in their clothing during massage; necklaces should come off. Sessions begin and end at the scheduled time, so arriving a few minutes early helps. Packages of one-hour prenatal and postnatal sessions are available on inquiry, and gift certificates for 60 or 90 minute sessions are valid for one year from purchase. The business is out of network with insurance but provides a superbill for reimbursement. It accepts Zelle, credit card (not Discover), Venmo, PayPal and cash. Bookings are made by text or phone at 917-385-8820 or through the contact form.
Focused on supporting clients through fertility, pregnancy, postpartum and early parenthood, with a non-judgmental approach to feeding and a stated goal of keeping clients comfortable.
An inclusive practice that welcomes partners, dads, athletes and family members alongside pregnant clients.
