About

MAK Beauty Institute was founded in 2011 by Tatyana Carr, who started in the industry at Joseph & Friends Salon and Spa in Atlanta in 2004 and later joined that salon's educational team. She launched the school after seeing that newly graduated stylists were running into the same difficulties she had faced when she finished school. The stated mission is to give students an effective post-secondary education and prepare them to become confident, knowledgeable hairdressers who can build careers in beauty.

The campus covers about 4,000 square feet with 16 work stations, 5 washing stations and 3 nail stations. Parking is free and the building is wheelchair accessible. Classes are kept small, and students work on real clients from their first day rather than only on mannequins.

The student salon takes bookings online through Fresha, by phone, or as walk-ins. Every service is performed by a student under the direct supervision of a licensed instructor. The school says it has served more than 6,000 clients in total, with students handling roughly 35 to 40 clients a day.

The school is a Redken School Partner and offers Redken training in color, balayage and cutting. Its hair programs cover cutting, color, extensions, keratin, chemical texture, hair botox and eyelash extensions, while the barber programs cover classic cuts, fades, straight razor shaves and beard grooming. The Esthetician program covers facials, waxing, makeup, skin analysis, eyebrow lamination and microblading, and the Nail Technician program covers manicures, pedicures, acrylics, gel and nail art.

Every program includes a professional starter kit and preparation for the Georgia State Board exam, including written exam prep and practical exam drills. Full-time students attend 34 hours a week, Monday through Thursday 9am to 6pm and Friday 9am to 4pm. Part-time students attend 20 to 28 hours a week with flexible scheduling. Classes start on the first Monday of each month, and transfer hours are accepted with evaluation of prior credits available. The school reports a 100% licensure rate and a 98% graduation rate for 2026 according to its NACCAS comparison, and says graduates who want work typically find a position within 30 days.

Students train on actual clients from the first day, in small classes built around hands-on practice and preparation for licensing.

The school describes its culture as family-oriented, with birthday celebrations and support that continues after graduation.
