The business opened in 2012 as Badlands, founded by Deidre Novella. In 2024 she passed it to its staff so she could focus on her haircare line, Afterworld Organics. It now operates as Lost Foundry under new ownership, a new name, and a new business structure.

It was founded as a safe space for all people, with queer expression especially in mind. Services are not priced or styled by gender. Stylists use creative language so clients can describe the result they want without preset ideas about what that should be. The team works as independent stylists, and each one sets their own prices, so the listed prices are ranges across the team.

Appointments can be held at the salon, at the client's home, or as live stream sessions conducted remotely over video chat. Prices and durations are starting-point quotes. The salon is open seven days a week, with weekday hours roughly from 9:30 am to 7:00 or 8:00 pm, Friday until 9:00 pm, and shorter weekend hours. Clients can book by phone or email. Clients who arrive 15 minutes or more late may not be able to keep their appointment. A payment card is needed to hold an appointment, but nothing is charged at booking, and the remaining balance is paid at the salon on arrival.

The team pairs careful listening with technical skill, and stylists use creative language so clients can describe their goals without preconceived ideas.
