Cassie founded the salon in 2017 as a neighborhood hair salon, art gallery and consignment shop, with the aim of giving artists of all kinds a place to share their work and grow. The business has come through an electrical fire, a relocation and expansion, and opened a second location in Palatine in 2024.
The salon runs an apprentice program for aspiring stylists, started in 2021. Apprentices are current cosmetology students or recent graduates, and their work is offered on Model Mondays at slightly longer appointment times and discounted rates. The salon also hosts in-house education and networking events, including a yearly Hair Jam and guest artist sessions, and it hires and features local artists, having hosted more than 40 of them along with many consignment artists and makers.
Before booking, clients can take a free 15-minute haircut consultation in person or by Zoom with most stylists. Some services, including special effects, corrective and global blonde color and extension services, need a consultation first, and first-time color services always do. Color is measured with SALON SCALE technology and charged per gram on top of the service cost, and a $3 Green Circle fee is added to each service. Color services over three hours need a $100 deposit. Clients are asked to arrive 15 minutes early, and cancellations need 48 hours' notice. Clients must be 10 or older. Curly-hair appointments begin with a deep clean hair bath, a scalp treatment and a styling tutorial, so hair should arrive clean, dry and detangled. Pricing is based on hair length, density and technical difficulty rather than gender, and on stylist experience and education.
Sustainability work includes Green Circle certification and a compost partnership with Block Bins. The salon reports recycling 99 percent of its salon waste, including clippings, foils, excess color and gloves. Sales regularly generate donations for Howard Brown Health, One Heart One Soul, Greater Chicago Food Depository and Equality Illinois. A free zine, Little Broken Zine, made with the team, is offered at both locations, and merchandise is sold at local art events, pop-ups, farmers markets and music festivals. Crain's Chicago Business, UrbanMatter and Modern Salon have featured the salon. According to the salon, the Chicago Reader named it Chicago's Best Hair Salon, and Salon Today's 200 list recognized it for growth.
Built as a shared space for artists of all kinds, the salon sets prices by hair length, density and technical difficulty rather than gender.
