James Joseph Salon Lynnfield | Market Street

James Joseph Salon started in 1997 with five stylists in a small basement on Newbury Street in Boston. About five years later it moved to a larger loft at 30 Newbury Street, which remains the flagship. The business has since grown to seven locations, with the W Hotel branch, Medford, Plymouth, Lynnfield, Burlington and Watertown joining the original.

Services are offered a la carte. Color work includes single process color, root-only color, glaze and toner, face frame highlights, partial and full foil highlights, and balayage. Wash, cut and style is the core salon cut, and blow-dries and wash and blow dry appointments are also available. Special-occasion work covers up-dos and down-dos. Smoothing options include keratin treatments, a faster keratin express that the salon says lasts about six weeks, and a Brazilian blowout built on a liquid keratin formula. Permanent curls are offered for volume and texture, and extensions are available with pricing set after a consultation.

Booking has a few house rules. Appointments must be secured with a credit card, and cancellations inside 24 hours are charged the full price of the booked services. Color booked online must be paired with a wash, cut and style or a blow-dry. An exact hair quote requires a free 15-minute consultation, since quotes are not given over the phone. Clients who are unhappy with a service are asked to call within seven days so the salon can respond. Walk-ins are welcome for hair services at the W Hotel location.

Training is run through James Joseph Academy, which offers continuing education for stylists. Junior Stylist Training is a paid program for recent graduates with at least one hands-on session a week at the Watertown training center, and Advanced Education offers quarterly classes in color and cutting for experienced stylists. Clients can also book as models for weekly classes, with haircuts at $20 and color at $35 to $60, supervised by the education team. The salon says the academy has trained many of the area's top stylists.

Prices vary by stylist level and by the services and products a service requires, and they may change without notice. At Newbury Street, for example, wash, cut and style runs from $85 for a Stylist to $110 or more for a Director, and balayage starts at $230. The salon also sells hair products and gift cards, which come in standard amounts or a custom value, and runs a loyalty program that gives points for wash, cut and finishing services and for retail spending. The salon describes itself as award-winning and says it has been recognized by The Improper Bostonian and featured in magazines including Allure, Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Glamour, Self, Teen Vogue and Lucky.

The salon says it keeps up with hair trends through ongoing education and advanced workshops run by James Joseph Academy.

The Newbury Street location has an outdoor deck.
