Spray tans use dihydroxyacetone (DHA), which reacts with the amino acids in the skin to build color. A standard salon tan takes about 30 minutes, and a mobile tan takes about an hour, with the artist traveling to the client. Tan parties run about two hours for groups of at least three.
Before a tan, clients are asked to skip deodorant, lotion and makeup and to exfoliate. Waxing should be avoided three days beforehand and laser hair removal two weeks beforehand. After a tan, clients should wait at least six to eight hours before showering and avoid sweating until after the first shower. A tan usually lasts five to ten days, depending on skin type and aftercare. The solution contains no sunscreen and offers no protection against sunburn, and the business does not recommend tanning shortly before photo shoots, modeling work or weddings unless a trial tan has been done first.
