J3 Studio opened in 2008 in the Lafayette Square neighborhood of St. Louis. It later moved a few blocks to its current South 18th Street address. The name J3 was picked when the business was formed as an LLC, which still operates under the name J3 Studio LLC.

The studio describes its atmosphere as comfortable, relaxed and down-to-earth, and says it has built the business by looking after its clients well. According to the studio, clients have told it they consider it the best in the city; that is the studio's own report.

Visits begin with an intake form for new clients, completed before the first appointment. The studio calls the business day before to remind clients. It does not book more than one client in the same hour. Add-on treatments are available and can be discussed with an esthetician during your visit. Hours run Tuesday 10am to 8pm, Wednesday and Thursday noon to 8pm, Friday 10am to 5:30pm and Saturday 11am to 5pm, with the studio closed on Mondays and Sundays. Cancellations need a call or email at least 24 hours ahead; late cancellations or missed visits are charged at least half the service price. Clients must be over 18, and voluntary cosmetic services are not refundable. Brow lamination and lash lifts each have their own consent form, and brow lamination uses chemicals that touch the skin and can trigger allergic reactions.
