About

Humble Hair is a Norfolk salon founded by Shanita Robinson. It started in a salon suite more than ten years ago, after she had begun by working out of her kitchen. Today it runs as a mixed community of commission stylists and booth renters, and the salon is in the Monticello Arcade with entrances on E. Plume Street and E. City Hall Avenue. Parking options listed include the South lot of Macarthur Center Mall and the Hilton Main Garage, along with street parking.

Sew-ins are the signature service, and the approach centers on reducing and preventing damage while protecting the natural hair underneath. A sew-in visit can include a deep shampoo, a treatment, a trim, and a sew-in shampoo. Detangling can be added; if it is needed when a client arrives, the fee is higher than the online price and depends on how long it takes. Bridal sew-in requests are taken for brides only, by email, with the client's name, wedding date, photos of their hair, and the style they want.

The salon sells hair extensions described as ethically sourced from Southeast Asia and India, and lists coarse curly Burmese pieces starting at $157.50. Extensions are usually preordered, and hair is occasionally available on-site. The shop also carries Coconut Milk shampoo, conditioner, and leave-in conditioner, Glazed Edges, and several styling lines.

Booking is by appointment only, through a waitlist. Every submission is a request, and the salon reviews it and reaches out before confirming. No deposit is charged, but a card is collected at booking. Cancellations made at least 72 hours ahead carry no fee, while shorter notice may cost up to 75% of the service, and same-day cancellations that are not emergencies are charged 75%. Emergencies are reviewed case by case. Frequent cancellations may lead to losing booking privileges, and a no-call, no-show means being barred from future appointments. Purchase questions are usually answered within 24 hours.

Beyond hair, the salon says its focus includes clients' overall health, and it takes part in wellness events. Staff benefits include a health plan with 12 mental health visits a year and 24/7 virtual physician access, along with Aflac accident and supplemental insurance.

The salon's sew-in method aims to limit damage and protect the natural hair underneath. Its focus is meant to reach past hair to clients' overall health.
