Houston Training Schools has operated in Houston since 1987, when it opened its first campus, and later expanded to a second campus. It is a private post-secondary school licensed by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation and accredited by the Council on Occupational Education. The school describes itself as an exclusive CHI Partner School and says it has helped thousands of students work toward cosmetology licenses over its history.

Programs cover cosmetology, barbering, esthetics, nail technology and eyelash extension specialist work. Cosmetology and barbering are each 1,000 hours, esthetics is 750 hours and takes about 30 weeks, nail technology is 600 hours, and eyelash extension specialist is 320 hours. Barbering can take up to 40 weeks, and barbering students must finish the full 1,000 hours to qualify for the Texas barber license exam. Tuition is $3,380 for eyelash extension, $10,900 for nail technology, $13,500 for esthetics, and $16,100 each for barbering and cosmetology. The student kit and required textbooks are included, along with CHI tools and products for training. Texas cosmetology exam fees are $131 paid to PSI, plus a $50 TDLR license application fee.

The clinic is staffed by students, who perform every service while a licensed instructor supervises, and instructors monitor nail services at all times. Walk-ins are welcome. Clinic hours are Monday to Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Chemical services have their own windows, from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Thursday at the Main Campus only, and 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday. Services performed by students in training are discounted. Senior citizens receive discounts on some services, and some services, including haircuts, are free for First Responders in uniform.

Applicants must be above compulsory school age with a high school diploma or GED. The school accepts federal student loans, Pell and FSEOG grants, scholarships based on merit or need, tuition payment plans spread over several months, and a monthly plan for the manicuring program. According to its FAQ, eligible students on federal loans may need only a $300 down payment while in school. The school says it helps students graduate without debt and offers job placement support to graduates.

Scheduling is flexible, with part-time enrollment and self-paced completion of required hours for barbering and cosmetology students. Instruction is offered in English and Spanish, and students practice natural and textured hair care, including braids, locs, twists, sew-in tracks and weave applications. Classes are small, with one-on-one instruction. The student body represents more than 40 countries. The school says its cosmetology graduates reach a 90% pass rate on licensing exams.

Training is hands-on: students serve real clients while instructors supervise each service. The school says it teaches natural, organic-based products without harsh chemicals.
