About

hello, braid. is a braiding studio in Rockville with a team of stylists who work on protective styles for natural hair. The studio describes its braiding as low tension and suitable for natural hair, whether or not extensions are added, and says its styles are meant to help with length retention while keeping the ends moisturized and sealed.

The studio also focuses on twists and locs as lower-maintenance options for natural hair. Microlocs are a major part of the menu: they can start with braids, twists or braid extensions, but extensions are not offered with twists and interlocs are not offered. Standard microloc parts measure about 1/2 to 1/3 inch and are sized to hair density, with thicker hair usually needing smaller parts. Microparts, which range from 1/4 to 1/2 inch, are not recommended for fine hair and carry an extra fee for install and reties.

Booking is done through the studio's Square site, and clients may also contact the studio by Instagram DM or text, with replies aimed within 24 to 36 hours. Hair for services is not provided, so clients buy their own, with guidance from the studio's Instagram highlights. Hair should be washed and blow dried with no product or oils beforehand, though heat protectant is allowed, and shampoo is not provided at the studio. A complimentary blow dry is available for clients who cannot blow dry their own hair. Only parents of children may attend appointments with them, and no other guests are allowed.

The studio describes its braids and styles as low tension, natural hair friendly and length retaining, and presents twists and locs as low-maintenance, permanent natural hair styling aimed at growth and retention.
