Headchop was established in March 2011 by Martha Ellen Mabry. It began as a one-chair salon in a Williamsburg basement and later grew to more chairs. Dry cutting is the salon's specialty. Hair stretches when wet, so cutting it dry lets the stylist see how it will fall in its natural state, which the salon says helps clients avoid leaving shorter or with higher layers than they wanted. New clients book a chop with a wash and styling, and are asked to send photos of their current hair and the look they want when they express interest in a color service. Appointments often fill three to four weeks ahead, and walk-ins are highly unlikely. Clients are asked to arrive five to ten minutes early with dry, fresh, tangle-free hair so natural curls and waves stay intact. Specialty color is priced after a consultation, and some color services are done by Zoom or in person.
The menu includes signature chops such as Chop N' Squeeze, which is a dry cut with a wash and natural curl set, and Chop N' Blow, which is a dry cut with a wash and blowout. Stay N Play services cover bang trims, cuts and face-framing sessions. House Color services are fully performed by stylists in training and overseen by experts, and are offered at a lower price with a longer appointment. Color options include single process color, color panels, freehand painting, foil highlights, bleach-ups with root toning, ombre, and a non-permanent gloss. Tape extensions from Great Lengths are installed after a required consultation.
Treatments can be added to most services. They include Ecoslay moisture and protein options, Hair-apy clarifying and scalp treatments, a K18 damage treatment, and Mr. Smith shampoo and masque add-ons. Changes or cancellations need 48 hours notice, and later changes are charged a portion of the service. Cash is not accepted for services, though tips can be sent by Venmo or paid in cash.
Dry cutting is used so the stylist can see how hair will look in its natural state, which the salon says helps prevent unwanted length or layers.
