Hana Designs

Hana Designs began in 1981 as a mobile wig and cranial prosthetic service and opened as a salon at its Littleton location in 1983, when hair replacement was added to the services. The business is local and woman-owned, and it says it has over 40 years of experience with wigs and scalp-aging products. It also says it is referred by the medical community.

The salon serves clients whose hair has been affected by cancer treatment, alopecia, burns, thinning or other hair loss conditions. Its oncology work includes partnerships with several hospitals in the Denver area: Children's Hospital, St. Joseph's Hospital, Boulder Community Hospital and Rose Medical Center. Products range from human hair and synthetic wigs in monofilament, hand-tied, lace front and gripper or sports constructions to toppers, partial wigs and headcoverings. Custom wigs and headcovers are made for hair loss linked to alopecia, trichotillomania and autoimmune conditions, and alopecia hairpieces are available in either human or synthetic hair.

A first visit starts with a new client consultation, which is booked by phone. Walk-ins are accepted when there is time, though calling ahead is encouraged. Staff can answer questions about insurance reimbursement for a wig or cranial prosthetic; some cranial prosthetics may be covered, and the salon provides a receipt for the client to submit, since it does not deal directly with insurers.

The salon also runs Hana's Hope, a nonprofit offered through Hana Designs that provides free, customized wigs and services to people whose hair or appearance has changed because of health issues. Eligibility is based on need rather than ability to pay, and people apply through a form that can be emailed, mailed or brought in, or downloaded from the site. Gender-affirming services are also offered, including real hair wigs, custom wigs, toppers and hairpieces, in a setting the business describes as safe for people of all genders.
