Hair Response, founded in 1985 by Barbara Goldberg, has focused on made-to-measure wigs, toppers and solutions for hair loss for over four decades. The studio says it is not a retail wig shop. Appointments only, Tuesday to Saturday.
The business is a two-generation family business. Amy Salzstein joined in 1989 and carried it forward after Barbara Goldberg retired in 2007, and she now runs the studio as its owner and lead specialist.
It takes place in a private room, where the studio reviews the client's hair loss pattern, lifestyle, styling ability and coverage needs, and looks at options across a range of price points, with cost depending on the type of piece, the cap construction and whether it is human or synthetic hair. The studio offers four cap constructions: machine-made, mono top, all hand-tied and lace front.
Each wig, topper and cranial prosthesis is measured, fitted, cut and styled for the individual client. New clients are shown how to wear, style and care for their piece and receive a detailed care sheet. The studio works with hair loss from chemotherapy, radiation, alopecia, thinning hair and trichotillomania, and recommends that clients facing chemotherapy come in before treatment starts so the piece is ready in time. It can also help clients look into insurance coverage for a cranial prosthesis when hair loss is medically related.
In addition to made-to-measure pieces, the studio carries sleep caps, lounge caps, wraps and baseball caps for style and comfort, plus lightweight enhancements that can be worn beneath them. It also services wigs and toppers bought elsewhere. Visit frequency varies: some clients come in fortnightly for a wash and set, others every season for anti-frizz treatment and intensive conditioning, and a few once a year to renew the color on human-hair pieces.
The studio aims to inform, educate and empower each client so they can make their own informed decisions.
Consultations take place in a private room.
