Hair Perception & Designs was founded in 1991 by husband and wife hairdressers Dan and Helene Reed. The salon has since moved to a new location.

The salon works as a rental space. Each stylist is independent and rents their own area, and there are no commissioned stylists or salon employees. Stylists set their own hours and prices, manage their own clients, and handle their own scheduling and retail sales. The salon rents to licensed cosmetologists and keeps the building clean, safe and in working order.

There is no receptionist, so clients book directly with the stylist they want. Some stylists may be booked two to four weeks out. The salon is closed on Sundays, and Monday through Saturday hours vary by stylist. The salon describes its setting as a small local space with a diverse, luxurious feel.
