Hair Maiden

Hair Maiden was established in 2015. The salon describes itself as an alternative to traditional salons in Florida, and says it aims to go beyond clients' expectations and keep the atmosphere welcoming and inclusive for everyone.

Locs are made with the crochet method, without wax or chemicals, and the locticians only perform locking within that method. Services include new locs, loc maintenance, loc extensions made with natural or synthetic hair, and loc coloring. The salon also creates custom synthetic dreadlocks and offers installation and removal of synthetic dreadlock extensions. New locs and extensions need at least 3 to 4 inches of hair. A full head of long locs without extensions can take 8 to 16 hours.

Before booking a loc service, new clients fill out an online intake form and complete a consultation, where the loctician assesses the hair and quotes a service time. A deposit and a signed service agreement are needed to hold an appointment. Loc appointments are billed by the hour, and the deposit, which covers at least one hour, is applied to the balance. The deposit is kept if an appointment is cancelled within 48 hours or if the client does not show. Appointments can be booked online.

For aftercare, the salon recommends washing locs once or twice a week and waiting 2 to 3 weeks after new locs are created before the first wash. New locs usually need maintenance every 2 to 3 months during their first year. Loc extensions made with human hair can be kept indefinitely, though blonde human hair may not last as long. The salon advises against coloring synthetic dreadlock extensions. Twist-outs and interlocking are not performed, and the salon refers clients to other local locticians for those services.

The salon sells its own shampoo and scalp products for locked and natural hair. These are handmade locally in small batches, packaged in eco-friendly materials, and made with natural ingredients. They are described as vegan and free of parabens, phthalates, propylene glycol, sulfates, gluten and artificial dyes or colors. Dollylocks refreshing and tightening sprays are also carried, along with loc ties and beaded and jeweled accessories made in the salon or brought in by clients for resale. The online store lists shampoo bars from $5.00 to $10.00, scalp rollers at $10.00 and conditioner bars from $10.00 to $20.00.
