Ground Zero Salons began in 1987 in Powelton Village, West Philadelphia, and was founded by Wendy Weinstein, who still owns the salon. The first location mostly served students and neighbors, sitting between Drexel University and the University of Pennsylvania.
Today the salon draws clients from across Philadelphia and its suburbs, and it has two Philadelphia locations: 7119 Germantown Avenue in Mt. Airy (215.242.2555) and 752 S. 4th Street in South Philadelphia (215.925.4222). The salon says it considers itself a fixture of every neighborhood it serves, and that it gives back by raising money and awareness for local charities.
According to the salon, it has franchised six Ground Zero Salons and has trained more than 100 stylists, around a dozen of whom have gone on to open their own salons.
Weinstein has worked in the Philadelphia salon industry for about 35 years, according to the salon, with experience in color, haircuts, perms, makeup, applications, up styles and salon management. The salon describes her as a master of beauty and cosmetology.
Listed hours are Tuesday to Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The salon's philosophy centers on community involvement, with a stated commitment to giving back to the neighborhoods it serves.
