About

Grabber School of Hair Design is a beauty school in St. Louis that has been in operation for more than 45 years. According to the school, it sets its educational programs above the minimum standards required. The school holds national accreditation from the National Accrediting Commission of Career Arts & Sciences, which the U.S. Department of Education recognizes for cosmetology arts and sciences and massage therapy programs.

The front of the building is a clinic where the public can book salon services. Those services are carried out by students under the supervision of licensed educators, and the room is designed to resemble a real-world salon and spa. The campus covers more than 17,000 square feet. The clinic has manicuring tables, pedicure stations, hooded dryers, wash bowls, beauty stations and treatment rooms, while the back of the building holds classrooms, offices and a student break area. The school says its instructors have many years of experience and each brings a specific area of emphasis.

The school offers a cosmetology diploma in a 43-week daytime or 58-week evening schedule, a 12-week daytime or 16-week evening manicuring program, and esthetician training as a 750-hour or 900-hour program that runs 26 weeks in the daytime or 35 weeks in the evening. Cosmetology classes run Monday through Friday during the day and Monday through Thursday plus Saturday in the evening. New classes start every five weeks. The cosmetology program is taught in English, and an Instructor Training Program is also available. Students receive a kit with the tools needed for their program, and financial aid is available to those who qualify. Published total program costs range from $5,550 for manicuring to $24,983 for cosmetology, with tuition, kits, fees and an optional laptop listed separately.

The school reports 2024 NACCAS figures of a 92.9 percent graduation rate, 92.8 percent placement rate and 90.2 percent licensure rate across all programs. For cosmetology alone it reports an 86.8 percent graduation rate, 91.3 percent placement rate and 97.9 percent licensure rate. The campus also runs on energy-conscious features, including a rooftop solar panel system, carbon dioxide sensors that bring in fresh air when the building is busy, vapor control systems at the manicuring stations and a greenhouse solarium that supplements heating.

Salon appointments need to be booked at least 24 hours in advance. If the phone goes unanswered, callers can leave a voicemail, which the school returns by the next business day.

Salon services are performed by students training in the program, supervised by licensed educators, and the instructors each bring an individual area of expertise.

The clinic is set up to feel like a working salon and spa.
