The shop was founded in 1981 by Kim Kapp, who graduated from the Kansas School of Men's Hairstyling in Wichita in 1975 and first worked as a licensed barber at a shop in the Kansas City area. In 1977 Kapp and Dave Bowman co-founded Barberskilt, a salon in the Sun Publications Building off 107th and Metcalf. The business later bought a free-standing brick building off College Boulevard and began renting suites there. The owner's career in hair reaches its 50th year in 2025.

The shop leases out its suites to independent professionals. Two are private and six are semi-private, all open to licensed barbers and cosmetologists, and one semi-private suite is set aside for spa nail services. Every suite comes fully furnished for a single occupant and has an electric barber chair, a sink bowl, station mats, and storage beneath the counter. Layouts can be adjusted, and each renter decides their own hours, services and prices. Renters are also given promotional materials. The shop describes its rent as competitive, and Chelsie Beall, who has joined the management team, can share rent details on request. Shared areas include a lobby with a wood-burning fireplace and a TV, high-speed internet, a small kitchen in the break area, two restrooms, on-site laundry, janitorial service, and seating outdoors. Granite countertops appear throughout the space.
Clients can book hair and nail services with a specific professional by texting that person's name from the team page. Hair treatments are tailored to individual needs, and personalized consultations are available by call or text. Services range from haircuts for men, women and kids, shampoo and haircut, beard work and perms to coloring, highlights and special event styling. Nail services include manicures and pedicures (including natural nail versions), gel polish, CND Plexigel Builder Gel and sculptured nails. The building sits across the street from the Corporate Woods business park, with quick access from the 435 and 69 highways and parking the shop describes as convenient and plentiful.
