Ethereal Locs

Ethereal Locs was established in 2020 and focuses on locs. Jay, the owner and loctician, started the business. It has two locations: one on Livernois Avenue in Detroit and one on Northwestern Highway in Southfield.

Starter locs are started with the comb coil and two-strand twist methods, in square, scallop or triangle part patterns. The service takes an hour and 45 minutes or more and costs $185, and new clients do not need a consultation first. A Starter Loc Style add-on for $15 is available only with starter locs. Retwists cost $75 and take an hour or more; they include a deep cleansing wash and the retwist itself. A simple Style for $20 is also offered, which covers one simple style only. Individual twists, plats, curls and petals are priced by length and are not part of that service. Style is not a full retwist, but it can be added to other services.

For maintenance, Wash Only is a $35 service that takes 30 minutes and includes a thorough cleanse, hydration and a scalp scratch. Hot Oil Treatment is $25 and takes 30 minutes, with a wash, hot oil and steam; it can be booked alone or added to another service. Loc Detox is $35 and takes 40 minutes, covering scalp repair and build-up removal with an apple cider vinegar loc bath, essential oils and a scalp scratch. Loc Cut is a $30 add-on that takes 20 minutes and trims a few inches off locs. Ethereal Locs does not do interlocking or loc combinations.

A free 30-minute question and answer session, called Service Consultation, is available for clients who want to talk through their hair first. Not every service requires a consultation.

Appointment policies: arriving more than 15 minutes late incurs a $15 late fee, and appointments are cancelled after 30 minutes late. No-call, no-show appointments are charged a nonrefundable booking fee. Southfield hours are Tuesday to Friday 9:00am to 6:30pm and Saturday 9:00am to 5:00pm, closed Sunday and Monday. Online orders can be picked up free at 21st Century Salon on Livernois Avenue in Detroit, Tuesday to Friday 9am to 6pm and Saturday 10am to 2pm.

The business recommends a home loc care routine: mist hair with water or rosewater until damp, oil each loc at the scalp, massage the oil in, and wrap hair at night. It suggests repeating this every two to three days or whenever hair feels dry.
