About

Essential Medicine is an integrative wellness clinic on La Jolla Boulevard, with a medical director who is a naturopathic doctor and a team of acupuncture practitioners. Several kinds of care are offered under one roof: hyperbaric oxygen therapy, acupuncture, microneedling, massage and bodywork, and an infrared sauna. The clinic is open Monday through Friday from 9:30am to 5:30pm and Saturday and Sunday from 11:00am to 4:30pm.

The clinic's main offering is hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Each session takes place in a hard-shell chamber pressurized to two atmospheres, with the client breathing oxygen through a mask. Appointments are booked in 90-minute slots. A new patient consultation that includes the first treatment lasts two hours and costs $300, and follow-up sessions last 90 minutes at $200 each. Session packages are priced at $950 for 5 sessions, $1,800 for 10 sessions, and $7,200 for a 40-session protocol. Before any treatment, staff review each client's history and goals and set expectations together with the client. The therapy is offered for brain healing, DNA repair, surgical recovery and long COVID recovery. According to the clinic, research into the therapy for brain recovery is extensive, and the treatment has been used in medicine for nearly a century. The clinic cites a 2026 meta-analysis of eight randomized trials, which reported gains in cognition, memory and sleep, mostly among people with mild traumatic brain injury. The same review found PTSD and emotional symptom results less consistent. Side effects were mostly mild and short-lived. The clinic also notes that most brain-focused research protocols use 40 to 60 sessions over two to three months.

Acupuncture is rooted in East Asian medicine. A new patient comprehensive visit is two hours for $300, an urgent care visit is 90 minutes for $200, and follow-ups run 60 minutes for $150 or 90 minutes for $200. Visits open with an intake covering health history, symptoms, sleep, digestion and stress, followed by a pulse assessment and examination. Fine, sterile, single-use needles are used. During the visit the practitioner chooses from fire cupping with warmed glass cups, gua sha, tuina, moxibustion and electroacupuncture. Fire cupping on its own is 60 minutes for $150 or 30 minutes for $80. Red and near-infrared light therapy can be added to any acupuncture session for 5 to 10 minutes at $45. Acupuncture is commonly used for pain and sports injuries, headaches and migraines, stress, anxiety, sleep, digestive complaints, women's health and surgical recovery.

Clinical microneedling addresses skin texture, fine lines, acne scarring, pores, and melasma or sun-related discoloration. A 90-minute session is $450, and stem cell or exosome enhancement raises it to $600 or $750. Treatments are commonly done as a series spaced four to six weeks apart, followed by maintenance sessions. Clients are asked to avoid retinol, exfoliants and harsh skin treatments for three to five days beforehand, and a topical numbing cream is typically applied first. Cosmetic acupuncture for the face, neck and scalp is 90 minutes for $200 or 60 minutes for $150, usually begun as a short run of weekly sessions and then continued as monthly maintenance visits.

Massage and bodywork include Swedish, deep tissue and orthopedic and therapeutic massage in 60- and 90-minute sessions. Swedish is $150 for 60 minutes or $210 for 90, and deep tissue and orthopedic work are $175 or $240. Lymphatic drainage massage, which the clinic offers including after surgery, is 60 minutes for $150. The infrared sauna is a private one-hour session that warms the body directly rather than the surrounding air, priced at $75 or $45 when added to any treatment. Clients must be 16 or older to use it. Sessions include a private shower, reverse osmosis water, tea, yoga therapy balls and towel service, and a sunlit shower with natural body care products is available afterward. The clinic says sauna use dilates blood vessels, supports circulation and helps the body clear waste through sweat, and that it can ease muscle soreness and stiff joints. It suggests using the sauna after acupuncture or massage, and pairing it with hyperbaric oxygen therapy or lymphatic drainage when recovery is the goal. Infrared contrast hydrotherapy is 30 minutes for $85.

Holistic care that blends East Asian and other traditional methods with modern science, based on the clinic's view that healing comes from within when the body is given the right conditions.

Wood, greenery and natural light fill the clinic.
