The building has been part of Avalon's history for nearly a century. It is a Spanish-style landmark on Crescent Avenue overlooking the harbor, and it was dedicated in August 1933 as the Promenade of Enchantment. The original marketplace held gift shops, curio stalls and restaurants serving Mexican and American fare.
Steven and Brenda Hoefs took on El Encanto and restored the building. Today the property brings together a spa, a cafe, an event venue, a retail boutique and two Villa Suites under one arched entry and courtyard.
A spa visit includes use of the sauna, steam room, showers, locker rooms and an ocean-view deck, where guests can order from the cafe. Massage and body treatments run 60 or 90 minutes and are often built around aromatherapy, warm stones or mineral salt. Facials come in several types, each suited to a different skin concern, and every facial includes a relaxing neck and shoulder massage.
The spa works exclusively with Sacred Earth Botanicals and ISUN Skincare. Villa Suite guests have full access to the spa and its amenities, and one of the two suites is fully accessible.
The spa works exclusively with two product partners and describes its product lines as certified organic. The cafe sources its ingredients with intention and cooks everything in-house.
An iconic arched entry, a courtyard and a harbor-view terrace give the property its setting.
