About

Dragonfly Dawn Electrolysis was set up as a supportive, understanding and safe space for hair removal, open to all bodies. Maeve Bibbee, the owner and certified electrologist, runs the practice from a suite inside a salon building in Midlothian.

A visit starts with a consultation. The $10 consultation takes about 15 minutes and covers a questionnaire and the start of a treatment plan, and the fee is credited toward the first treatment. Consultation and treatment can also be combined into one visit, priced from $25 to $85 depending on length and running 30 to 75 minutes. Electrolysis sessions are offered at 15, 30, 45 or 60 minutes. For the first consultation, the hair in the treatment area needs to be long enough to grip firmly with tweezers.

Before treatment, clients are asked not to shave or trim the area with scissors for 2 to 3 days, and to avoid waxing, tweezing, depilatory creams and laser for 4 to 6 weeks. During a session a fine probe is placed into each follicle, the treated hair is removed with tweezers, and an antiseptic is applied at the end. A cooling agent may also be used. Redness, small bumps, swelling and scabbing are described as normal afterward and usually settle within a couple of hours to a couple of days.

The business says electrolysis can be used on any part of the body where the follicle opening is visible, and that it works across genders, ages, skin types and hair colors. It also says improvements may be seen after about 3 months, with more than 6 months expected on a regular treatment cycle. Clients under 18 need additional screening before electrolysis.

No single electrolysis method is treated as best, so the electrologist and client build the treatment plan together.

A private, safe and affirming space.
