Sisterlocks is a trademarked locking technique created by Dr. JoAnn Cornwell in 1993. Installing it requires a special tool and typically takes about 15 to 30 or more hours, depending on hair length and density. Microlocs is a broader term for small locs that aren't made with the Sisterlocks method. Parting and size can be grid-based or freestyle, and no certification is required to install them. The studio also offers Tinylocs, a multi-visit process that begins with a $50 consultation, followed by an establishment visit of two to three days that can install up to 400 locks and comes with a starter kit.
Sisterlocks and microlocs can begin on natural, unprocessed hair that is roughly 1.5 to 2 inches long, and perms don't call for a cut. Before an install, clients are asked to wash their hair beforehand and come in without any conditioner, oil or moisturizer in it. Test sample locks are placed to check sizing and pattern, and they remain in for two washes. Pricing is set by measuring hair length with a tape. If color is wanted, it goes on before installation, and clients are advised to wait around 6 to 12 months afterward before coloring again.
Retightening is central to keeping Sisterlocks and microlocs neat. The studio notes that inconsistent retightening can lead to slippage, weak roots, breakage, locs joining together and higher costs. The first Sisterlocks package retightening is free. Other retightenings are priced by weeks between visits, and anything six or more weeks out requires a call for pricing. Installations are scheduled in 8-hour daily blocks with two 30-minute breaks.
Payment is by cash or Zelle and is due in full before a consultation or installation. A 20% deposit is due at booking for Sisterlocks and microloc installations and is non-refundable. Cancellations without at least 48 hours' notice carry a $50 fee. Missing an installation day after it has started carries a $400 fee, due before work resumes. Arriving 15 minutes late carries a $40 fee, and late clients are asked to call ahead. Children who aren't receiving services can't be on the premises during installations and retightening, and smoking and vaping are not permitted in the building. Clients may decline to have their work photographed for demonstrations.
Work centers on Sisterlocks and Tinylocs, with a focus on a standardized grid, a proper lock pattern and consistent retightening between visits.
Client reviews on the site describe a comfortable setting and fast, efficient service.
