Curly Hair Salon was opened by Dusty Schlabach, who owns the business and has worked with curly hair for more than 15 years. The salon describes itself as a safe space for curls. It has three locations, at 250 W Santa Fe Ave #20 in Fullerton, 815 Fairview Ave in South Pasadena, and 2014 30th Street, Suite 101, in San Diego.
The salon focuses only on haircuts for curly hair and does not offer washing, styling, coloring, straightening, relaxing, braiding or extensions. Each cut is customized to the client's length and curl pattern. Stylists cut dry so they can see each curl's natural length, shape and behavior before cutting.
A visit starts with hair that is fully dry, freshly washed and styled with the client's usual products. Hats, buns, clips and ponytails should be left at home. Clients are asked to arrive at least ten minutes early. Visits take under an hour and cost less than $100, according to the salon.
The menu covers shaping trims for keeping an existing shape healthy and split-end free, layering that adds volume at the top, which can include bangs, face framing and end dusting, and a bang trim or face framing service with connective work and stray-end trimming. The Big Chop lets the client choose the length to keep, and the cut is shaped from there.
Appointments are booked through the Boulevard booking platform. Confirmation messages go out by text and email 48 hours before the appointment, and not responding may lead to cancellation. Cancellations made at least 48 hours ahead carry no fee, while shorter notice is charged 50% or 100% of the scheduled services. Late arrivals that affect the service may be charged the full price.
Cuts are shaped around each client's length and curl pattern, and dry cutting lets the stylist see how each curl naturally sits before cutting.
