Curltopia is a salon and retail boutique in Smyrna built around curly hair. The salon calls itself a Deva-inspired salon and, as its own claim, the only salon in the Atlanta area that specializes in all hair types. It describes its team as multi-texture specialists, with natural-hair and straight-hair specialists among them.

This salon cuts curly and wavy hair with the Deva Cut, a dry method that trims each curl separately. Clients can pair it with the Deva 3-Step, which cleanses, conditions and defines curls, or book the 3-Step by itself without a haircut. Prices are $90 to $100 for the Deva Cut and $60 to $70 for the 3-Step, varying by stylist. Lorraine Massey created the technique; she wrote the book Curly Girl and co-owns Devachan Salon in New York City. Stylists are trained in the Deva approach to cutting, cleansing and styling curly and wavy hair, and the salon says its program has no equal. Becoming a Certified Deva Inspired Stylist requires the DevaCurl Academy 2-Day Cutting Curl Lab, while the Advanced level requires the Intense 3-Day Cutting Curl Lab, held at Devachan Salon.

Stylists work at Junior, Intermediate or Master level, and the levels reflect experience, with prices rising at each step. Every service includes a shampoo, a consultation, the service itself, hand-selected product recommendations and instructions for home care. Consultations are free when booked with a hair service and are recommended before chemical, color or extension work. First-time clients can book without knowing their hair needs; the stylist assesses curl pattern, shrinkage and damage, then recommends services and products. A full natural-hair consultation cannot be booked on its own, but a short walk-in consult with an available stylist is offered on weekdays.

To prepare for a Deva Cut, clients should wash, detangle and style their hair with product the morning of the appointment so curls are defined. Clients with kinkier natural hair should arrive in a wash-and-go finger-styled look so shrinkage can be judged. Curls should not come in pinned up in a ponytail, braid, bun, clips or a hat, and twists, coils, braids and weaves should be removed beforehand. Excessive detangling and taking down braids, twists, coils or weaves carry an additional charge. The waiting area is small, so clients should come alone. Children may visit only with an appointment, and other children need childcare arranged. Walk-ins are accepted, though there may be a short wait, and stylists are not double-booked.

Appointments are held with a credit card on file, which is charged only for a no-show or a cancellation with less than 24 hours' notice. A deposit paid in cash, card or check can be used instead and is forfeited in the same cases. The cancellation or no-show fee is $50 for a Deva service and $25 for other services. Children's prices match adult prices. There are no refunds on services or products, and sales are final, though in-store exchanges are accepted within 14 days on unopened, unused, sealed merchandise. Hours are Wednesday through Friday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; the salon is closed Monday and Tuesday.
