Founded in 1996 by Alessandro Santopaolo and Massimo Bianco, ContestaRockHair presents itself as an Italian hair brand with a rock-influenced identity. It describes itself as a creative company without geographic or expressive limits, built on a network of partners and on creative management of its staff.

The brand's salons are in Rome, Florence, Milan, New York and Miami. The Rome salons at Pigneto and Centocelle are described as among its historic locations. Rome also has salons in Monti, Testaccio, Termini and Prati, and the company keeps an office in Rome. Florence has five salons, at Borgo La Croce, Albero, Cecioni, San Quirico and Tavarnuzze in Impruneta. Milan's salon is at Porta Romana. In the United States, the New York salon sits on the fifth floor of a building on West 17th Street, and the Miami salon first opened on Espanola Way in Miami Beach in autumn 1999 before moving to the Upper Buena Vista area between the Design District and Little Haiti.

The founders developed a cutting technique that every member of staff is taught, so the method is shared across the salons. Services cover cuts, bobs, layers, pop color, shaves and treatments. The Centocelle salon also offers children's haircuts with special discounts, and it describes itself as blending tradition with innovation while staying rooted in its neighborhood.

Opening hours differ by salon. Pigneto, Monti and Testaccio open Tuesday to Saturday from 10:30 to 19:30. Centocelle keeps continuous hours from 10:00 to 19:00 on the same days. Borgo La Croce, Albero, Cecioni, San Quirico and Tavarnuzze open Tuesday to Friday from 10:00 to 19:00, with Saturday until 18:00. Milan Porta Romana is open Thursday to Saturday from 10:30 to 19:30 and on Tuesday and Wednesday from 12:30 to 21:30. New York and Miami are closed on Mondays. Several salons run weekday happy hours from 17:30 to 19:00 or an aperitivo, with 15% off services. Gift cards are sold in set amounts from 30 to 200 euros or a custom amount above 200 euros, are valid for three months at all salons, are non-refundable but transferable, and can be scheduled for delivery up to a year ahead.
