Conscious Coils was founded in Portland by Amber Starks. The salon describes itself as more than natural hair care, presenting itself as a movement built around self-acceptance. The salon works only with natural hair and does not use chemicals. Services cover cornrows and flat twists, with or without extensions, along with protective styles such as box braids, Senegalese and Marley twists, and crochet braids. Natural styling includes twist-outs, braid-outs, roller sets, comb coils, Bantu knots and up-dos. Locs work includes traditional locs, loc extensions, permanent instant and crochet locs, and Sisterlocks separating, styling and re-tightening.

Families with multiracial, foster and adopted children of African descent can get hair care for their children and learn basic how-to skills. Parents and clients can also book individual demonstrations on braiding, twisting, and detangling, which are held in the salon. Consulting and speaking on natural hair and cultural awareness is available to businesses, schools and organizations, with pricing by inquiry.

Styling is by appointment only. Clients should arrive with clean, freshly washed hair, since the salon does not offer shampooing, washing or conditioning. Services are priced by the hour with a one-hour minimum, rounded to the nearest half hour. Braid and protective style bookings require a $50 non-refundable deposit that goes toward the final price, loc installations require a $50 deposit, and Sisterlocks installation requires a $200 deposit. Appointments must be confirmed by 9pm the day before, and a missed appointment fee applies to late cancellations and no-shows. Seniors 60 and over, foster children, and clients with a birthday that month receive 10% off with ID. Payment is accepted in cash, debit or credit cards, and CashApp.

Parking includes a SmartPark at 10th and Yamhill, with private lots and street parking nearby; street parking requires payment until 7pm daily. Clients can reach the salon by phone at 971-998-8606 by text, or by email at consciouscoils@gmail.com.
