Color House Denver began in January 2011 under the name Do the Bang Thing Salon, working out of a home studio. It moved into a studio suite in 2013, then into a six-chair commercial space at Yale and I-25 in 2015, and into a full brick-and-mortar building on South Broadway in 2016. In 2021 the salon ended that South Broadway lease and bought a building in Englewood, where it operates today. Toby Z, the owner and a Master Stylist, has led the salon for nearly 14 years.

The salon occupies about 3,100 square feet in a space that was once a garage. The building is all black with pink doors, sitting between EPB Auto and Highwood Auto Body on South Broadway. Parking includes five spots in front, one of them accessible. Street parking on Broadway is limited to two hours, while Chenango and Layton have all-day parking. The salon is dog-friendly.

Booking works through the website, by phone, or by text, and the online calendar shows an estimated appointment length for each artist. A 35% deposit reserves every appointment. Cancellations or reschedules need at least 24 hours' notice, otherwise a 25% fee applies, and no-shows are charged 50% of the scheduled service. Online booking requires agreeing to the cancellation policy. Haircuts are priced by length, density, and time rather than gender, and color is priced by time, product, and complexity in the same way.

Consultations are a central part of how the salon works. Free consultations are offered for general services, perms, and extensions, and extensions always need one before booking, covering method, length and density goals, and a color match plan. Hair for extensions is ordered before the install. Perms require a signed waiver, and a perm judged unsafe means the deposit is refunded. The salon says it is one of few still offering perms, including modern and traditional options. It also offers Brazilian Blowout smoothing, which reduces frizz and shortens blow-dry time but is not permanent straightening, and the salon does not offer permanent straightening. Waxing is done at the shampoo bowl and not every artist offers it. The salon describes itself as a hair salon rather than a barbershop or spa, and it is not a licensed barbershop. Roughly three quarters of clients are returning guests, and the rest find the salon through Google or word of mouth.

Consultations are offered to help guests choose a service, particularly for maintenance, transformations, extensions, and texture work. The salon says every artist works to one shared standard of care.
