Charles Hair Specialists

Charles Hair Specialists traces its start to around 1920, when the founder, Charles (Calogero), opened a barber shop in Paterson, New Jersey. The business has stayed in the family for three generations. His son Charlie joined in 1953 and moved the shop to a larger space across the street, then relocated it to Fair Lawn, New Jersey after Charles died in the mid-1960s. Chuck, the founder's grandson, joined in 1982, and the salon moved to its current Paramus location in 2001. Charlie retired in 2014, and Chuck became the third-generation owner.

The salon says it has been cutting hair for more than 100 years. Its stated aim is excellent service delivered through hair care artistry, with the goal that clients feel at ease trusting the team with their styling.

The salon serves women, men and children. Adult services cover cuts and color for women and men, perms for women, hair pieces offered in a discreet setting, and special styles for weddings and other occasions. Clients book by calling the salon, as appointments are not taken through the website.

Charlies Kids Salon sits in the same building as the adult salon and is set up for children, with junior-sized chairs and styling stations shaped like airplanes and trucks. It offers haircuts for boys and girls from a few months old through childhood, and the team has experience helping children with special needs feel comfortable. When a child outgrows the kids' salon, they can move to the adult salon in the same building with their stylist. A loyalty card program is available for the children's salon. The building is handicapped accessible.
