Black Swan Holistic Head Spa is a family-run studio in Broad Ripple, Indianapolis, built around Japanese-inspired head spa rituals, facials and wellness experiences. The business says its services are tailored to calm the mind, ease tension and support the health of the scalp, hair, skin and nervous system. The space is quiet and close, and it welcomes individual guests as well as small groups of two or three.

Visits are by appointment only, and walk-ins are not accepted. Appointments are often booked about two months ahead, and classes often fill two to six months out. Guests check in at the front desk upstairs above Marigolds on Cornell Avenue. Parking is free and sits behind the building, with no entrance from the lot, so guests walk around to the front. Rituals start with a personal consultation and scalp analysis. Guests change into a robe and slippers, and head spa rituals do not include a blowout, so clients leave with towel-dried hair. A blow dry can be arranged with notice and is done by a licensed cosmetologist. Guests are asked not to wash their hair that day, may wear makeup, and should remove jewelry. Satin scrunchies are on hand if needed. Head spa services are not offered to guests with extensions, braids or sew-ins, and the studio advises against booking right after a color, perm or similar chemical service. Arriving 15 or more minutes late results in a reschedule. Cancellations, reschedules or no-shows with less than 48 hours' notice carry a fee equal to the deposit on the service.

The signature rituals pair a head spa with another element. The Black Swan Ritual adds a 30-minute foot soak with herbal tea. The Crown & Sound Ritual adds a crystal bowl sound bath, and the Crown & Glow Ritual adds a 30-minute facial. Separate head spa options include a 60-minute PURIFY ritual, a 90-minute version with extended massage, and a 70-minute Crown Renewal Ritual that includes red light therapy and focuses on hair growth. Skin options include a dermaplaning facial, a Black Swan Renewal Peel, and a 90-minute Sacred Glow Ritual with scalp massage and LED light therapy. Monthly memberships are also available.

The studio hosts classes and workshops such as tea ceremonies, flower mandala rituals, yoga, energy healing and self-care circles, offered both live stream and in person. It also runs a three-day, hands-on Head Spa training for licensed cosmetologists, estheticians and barbers, limited to six participants. Tuition is $3,200. A $1,000 non-refundable deposit holds a seat, the rest is due before the first day, and payment plans may be available. The curriculum covers scalp science and trichology, scalp analysis, hands-on technique, ritual design, facial integration, products, tools and sanitation, followed by ongoing mentorship. Participants should check their state's requirements before enrolling.
