About

The school was founded in 1960 by Ross Baldwin. Randy Baldwin joined in 1989 and is listed as president. The school says it has trained Austin beauty professionals for more than 64 years and has graduated more students than any other cosmetology program in Austin. It is accredited by the National Accrediting Commission of Career Arts and Sciences.

Cosmetology is a 1,000 clock-hour program, usually completed full-time in about 34 weeks. Roughly 800 hours cover hair, 100 cover skin and 100 cover nails. Hair training includes cutting, layering and texturizing, color, highlights and balayage, chemical textures, blow-drying and hot-tool styling, wigs, extensions and braiding, and salon management. Skin and nail training cover facials, waxing, eyelash tinting and extensions, manicures, pedicures and artificial nails. The esthetician program is 750 clock hours over about 25 weeks and includes anatomy, facial and body waxing, body treatments and machines such as microdermabrasion and galvanic skin response. The manicurist program is 600 clock hours over about 20 weeks and covers polish techniques, nail art, sculptured nails and acrylic tips.

Training is in person, in the classroom and in the student salon. The school is not a hybrid program and does not require work outside scheduled class hours. Classes run Tuesday through Friday, 8:30am to 5:00pm, and new classes begin about every six weeks. Cosmetology students follow the Pivot Point International curriculum and receive a supply kit, and all students take retail skills and salon business courses covering sales, career management and building a client base. Products used include Wella Hair Care, Redken, Dermalogica, Creative Nail Design, OPI, PCA Skin and Sanitas, depending on the program.

Each campus has a student salon open to the public, where students perform services under the supervision of licensed instructors. Salon hours are Tuesday through Thursday, 9:30am to 5:00pm, and Friday, 8:30am to 5:00pm. Prices vary with hair length and density, and the school asks clients to confirm current pricing directly.

Total program costs are $15,900 for cosmetology, $11,400 for esthetician training and $8,500 for manicurist training. Each total includes tuition, books, tools and a $100 enrollment fee. State licensing fees are paid separately when exams are taken, and according to the school, it charges no over-contract fees. Students can apply for Pell Grants, Direct Student Loans or monthly payment plans that carry no interest. Housing is not available on campus. Cosmetology students may transfer in up to 500 clock hours, with each transfer reviewed at enrollment. To apply, candidates must be at least 17, hold a high school diploma, GED or approved equivalent, sit for a personal interview, and show a driver's license or state ID. Prior beauty experience is not needed.

Training is hands-on and in person, built around clock hours in the classroom and student salon, with a curriculum meant to prepare students for licensing and salon work.
