About

Ally Electrolysis is a solo electrology practice in SW Portland, Oregon, owned and run by Karen. Treatments are offered by appointment in one-hour blocks and shorter slots, with per-hour pricing for longer multi-session plans.

The practice offers four electrology methods: electrolysis, which uses a chemical process; thermolysis, which uses heat; a blend of the two; and flash thermolysis. The method is chosen at consultation and adjusted at later visits based on each client's skin and hair. Karen is trained in all four methods.

A large part of the practice is gender-affirming electrolysis, including hair removal to prepare for gender confirmation surgery. Full clearing for surgery prep can take roughly 10 to 18 months, depending on the area, how much treatment a client tolerates, and how regularly they keep appointments. The surface area to clear for procedures such as vaginoplasty, labioplasty or phalloplasty is planned together with the client's surgeon. Hourly rates are the same for every body area, with no added charge for surgery prep. The practice will also work with clients when cost is a barrier, and it can provide receipts, chart notes and doctor's approval so clients can seek reimbursement from their own insurers. Ally Electrolysis does not bill health insurance directly, and it is working toward credentialing with Kaiser and other insurers.

The practice also treats hirsutism and hair growth linked to PCOS, focusing on hairs that are already dark and coarse. A doctor's care is not required for hair removal, but the practice recommends seeing a physician to address the underlying hormone cause. Lasers are also discussed as an option for reducing hair in some cases, though they are not suited to every hair and skin type and can be combined with electrolysis.

The practice aims for permanent hair removal that is safe and comfortable while still effective on unwanted hair. Electrolysis is described as the only FDA-approved method of permanent hair removal, according to the practice.
