About

Academy of Nail Technology is a family business that describes itself as 19 years old. It pairs a trade school with a public nail salon in Phoenix, and the school is not accredited by a national accrediting association. According to the school, its mission is to provide the top level of education in the nail industry and to teach students about total customer satisfaction. The salon describes itself as offering high-quality nail services in Phoenix.

The nail technician program is 600 hours, the number required for Arizona state licensing, and it runs in three modules. The first module is 180 hours, beginning with four weeks of pre-clinic work and then two weeks on the clinic floor, covering basic manicure, pedicure and acrylic. The second is 200 hours of nail enhancement theory and client services on the clinic floor. The third is 220 hours and adds business skills such as résumés, marketing and building a clientele. Students must score 80% or better on weekly multiple-choice tests to advance to the clinic floor, and they graduate after a written and practical exam plus final competency checks in manicure, pedicure and full sets. Theory and workbooks follow the first edition materials from Pivot Point International.

Visiting the salon means calling (602) 995-5666 to book, since services are by appointment only. Every service is performed by a student working under the direct supervision of a licensed instructor, and the school does not offer guarantees on that work. A redo within two days of service carries a product cost of $5 to $10. Students follow sanitation and disinfection practices set by the Arizona State Board of Cosmetology. Salon hours change from week to week between Tuesday and Friday.

Instructors are experienced nail technicians licensed in Arizona, and each one builds lesson plans for the theory lessons they teach. The school also invites local salons and industry businesses to speak to students, and many of them offer career opportunities to graduates. Manicure Mart, a supply company, operates alongside the school.

Prospective students can book a 45-minute tour online at the school address. Applicants 18 or older need proof of identification. Applicants 18 or younger need a high school diploma or GED, or be at least 16 with 10 high school credits. Enrollment includes an interview and tour, and applicants receive the school catalog before signing the agreement. Aestheticians and cosmetologists applying for the nail technician course must hold a current Arizona State Board license. Nail technician theory and the written practical exam cost $177, and the first license costs $63.

Classes pair theory with hands-on clinical work in the school's own salon, with instructors writing their own lesson plans.

A 3,000-square-foot training center with 18 professional workstations, a pedicure area with seating for 14 and twelve pedicure carts, that is non-smoking and has parking close by.
