About
Yendys Nefer-Atum founded The Cowrie Shell Center in 1991 and still owns and runs it. She has about three decades of natural hair care experience, centred on locs and textured hair. Alongside the salon work, she leads herbal walks and wild food tours in Prospect Park, working as an herbalist and wild foods guide. Her training came through apprenticeships with several master herbalists over roughly thirty years, and she studied under Queen Afua. She is currently a student of Mama Tioma Allison, a midwife and wild foods herbalist working in New York City and Jamaica. Dr. Lliala Afrika certified her in 2005. She is a certified holistic health consultant and a Certified Holistic Health Practitioner. She has guided hundreds of men, women and children in natural living and traditional medicine. My Salon Scoop gave her its 2010 Ultimate Hairapy Award, based on client nominations, for combining natural hair care with a holistic lifestyle regimen. Essence.com featured her in its Street Style coverage in spring 2012.
