Her work is especially associated with vitiligo and pigmentation disorders, but her practice also treats a broad range of skin and hair conditions in patients of all ethnicities and skin types. Alopecia is among her specialties, and patients come to her from around the world.
She lectures internationally on pigmentation disorders, chemical peeling, fillers and microdermabrasion, and speaks often about how visible and blue light affect the skin. Her research in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology examines iron-oxide containing formulations and visible light-induced pigmentation in skin of color. She has written more than 100 professional articles and abstracts and two textbooks. She was president of the Women's Dermatologic Society from 2017 to 2018 and belongs to the American Academy of Dermatology, the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, the American Dermatological Association, the International Peeling Society and the Skin of Color Society. She is a founding member of the Global Vitiligo Foundation. In 2006 she founded CARRY (Coalition for At-Risk Restoring Youth), a non-profit serving at-risk and foster care youth that includes pro bono dermatology clinics. She also created the KATALAYA Skin Care product line.
She received the 2019 Alan Shalita Memorial Award; in 2017, the Lifetime Achievement in Dermatology Award from the American Skin Association, the Everett C. Fox Memorial Award and Lectureship and the Goldman Humanitarian Award from the American Academy of Dermatology, and the Women's Dermatologic Society Legacy Award; and in 2011, the Women's Dermatologic Society Mentor of the Year Award and the Dermatology Foundation Practitioner of the Year award.
