Kusum Viswanathan

Kusum Viswanathan is Chief Medical Officer of One Brooklyn Health and Brookdale Hospital Medical Center. She chairs the pediatrics department at Brookdale and directs pediatric hematology and oncology across Brookdale, Interfaith and Kingsbrook hospitals. She chairs the Bio-Ethics Committee and sits on the Medical Advisory Board of the Make-a-Wish Foundation of New York.

She joined the Brookdale faculty in 1986. She graduated from the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi and completed a pediatric residency and a fellowship in pediatric hematology and oncology. She is board-certified in pediatrics and in pediatric hematology and oncology, and she is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Her clinical and research work spans anemias, bleeding disorders, pediatric cancers and sickle cell disease. She has taken part in multi-center clinical trials and national forums. Under her leadership, the institution has secured more than $4 million in HRSA and New York State grants for sickle cell education, outreach and transition services.

She has received the Brookdale Medal and lifetime achievement awards from the Sickle Cell Thalassemia Patient Network and Candice's Sickle Cell, and she has been recognized in the Castle Connolly Guide and on the U.S. News Top Doctors list.
